Hip Hop artist Tall Paul is Anishanaabe/Oneida from the Leech Lake reservation of Minnesota. Growing up in and out of foster care, Paul found comfort and inspiration in his Native traditions and language. This comes through in his work along with personal struggles and triumphs. His lyrics can also verge on the political, like on the track “Make America Great” — a collaboration with rapper “Tone” (T.O.N.Y.) for their Red Poets Society project. Paul pays homage to prominent Indigenous figures, like NFL Hall of Famer Jim Thorpe, who he looked up to as a youth and who helped him aspire to achieve greatness through his music. The importance of role models and looking to ancestors for guidance is mirrored in his music as well as in his daily life. When he’s not performing or spending time with his son, Paul is working with youth and promoting sobriety in the community.
