December 16, 2019
In time for the 2019 holiday season, sisters Tiffany Kuliktana Ayalik and Kayley Inuksuk Mackay of PIQSIQ have released an album of Christmas carols, Quviatsugvik: In Search of Harmony. Unlike traditional holiday music, their Inuit throat singing takes the familiar melodies to an eerie yet spiritually evocative place. Growing up in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories with roots in Nunavut, the PIQSIQ sisters have learned to see two perspectives at once. PIQSIQ incorporates improvisational looping while embodying Indigenous experience. In Inuktitut, PIQSIQ is a type of storm where winds blow in a very specific way, making it look like the snow is falling back up towards the sky.
