An Ojibwe hip-hop artist from Turtle Mountain Reservation, Mic Jordan has a strong sense of identity and passion for reaching out and lifting up those around him. Growing up in Belcourt, North Dakota without a father, and being discriminated against for having skin lighter than that of his peers, Jordan wasn’t a stranger to struggle. He used music and the values of his culture to strengthen his pride in who he is and help him cope with anxiety. His experiences led him to be especially compassionate and concerned for future generations. His song “Dear Native Youth” reflects this solidarity, as well as “For Portland”, a song he wrote for his daughter. Jordan works with his community on the issues of suicide and alcoholism among others, as a TedX speaker and leading hip-hop workshops for youth.
