Byron Nicolai is a 17-year-old traditional Yup’ik drummer and singer from Toksook Bay, Alaska — a village with a population of around 600 residents. Nicolai, who performs under I Sing, You Dance, gained his popularity by posting videos of himself singing traditional native songs on Facebook as a way to inspire Alaska native kids to engage with cultural traditions and music. His page I Sing, You Dance has thousands of views now. Just this summer, Byron performed at the White House. Byron Nicolai joins us this week to share his recent album release, “I Am Yup’ik”.
